I recently had a chance to read The New SAP Blue Book by Michael Doane. I found this to be very informative. This is a must read for beginners, as well as, seasoned SAP consultants. The book provides insights gathered from author’s own experience during several implementations and industry experts.
The author takes us through defining what is SAP, how a typical implementation looks like, necessary planning to take place, pitfalls to avoid, how to leverage best practices build into the software, and to post-go-live center of excellence.
One illuminating fact is, unlike any other software system, the life expectancy of SAP is around 20-25 years. Here is a software which can grow with the company and serve for a very long time. Once we realize that, all the planning, implementation, go-live, post-go-live maintenance and updates don’t seem excessive when the investment can be leveraged for a long time to come. We tend to forget that most of the time we compare SAP to other ERP systems that may not have the same life expectancy.
